Air Canada ad implies Atlantic Canada is its own country

Kids, stay in school.

Someone at Air Canada — or, to be fair, the ad agency hired by the airline — appears to have dropped out of geography class.

In a graphic sent out in a mass email, the Canadian airline appears to suggest Atlantic Canada is, in fact, not part of Canada.

“Get 15% off your flight between Canada and Atlantic Canada,” the image read.

Nationwide eye-rolling ensued.

Canadians gave the airline a hard time on Facebook, too.

“Just a quick question! I will be travelling from Atlantic Canada to Canada during your sale time. Do I require a passport given you have distinguished us as a separate country?” Ruth Burritt wrote on Air Canada’s Facebook wall.

“For what they charge to fly from the West to the East within Canada, it might as well be overseas,” added Facebook user Scott Brass.

CBC Nova Scotia quickly picked up the story. Air Canada didn’t seem bothered enough to make a correction and, instead, thanked the media for boosting its seat sales on Twitter and linked to the offer online.

On the airline’s official website, there is no mention of Atlantic Canada vs. the rest of Canada. The deal is simply for discounts on “flights to select Canadian destinations.”

The awkward Atlantic Canada ad does not appear on the airline’s Facebook page or Twitter account.
