Shiver me timbers! It's International Talk Like a Pirate Day

It’s September 19: International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Since it’s likely been a year since you gave your pirate voices a warm-up, here’s some pirate lingo to drop into your conversations today, courtesy of the founders of this very important day:

Instead of a simple “hello,” say, “Ahoy!”

If you’re surprised today, instead of shouting “whoa” or “no way,” blurt out, “Avast!”

Of course, it isn’t Talk Like a Pirate Day without a health dose of “Aye,” “Aye aye,” and “Arr!”

Change “my” to “me,” and “you” and “ye.”

And instead of “holy cow,” use the classic “shiver me timbers.”

Find a list of advanced pirate lingo — like “bilge rat” and “grog” — here.

Cast members of the Columbia Children’s Theatre production of “How I Became a Pirate,” are also offering a few pirate-speak lessons.

Here’s how to talk like a pirate in French and German.

If you’re online all day, just use this handy translator. And on Facebook, in general settings, change your language to “English (pirate).”

Need a joke or two to break the ice today? We’ve got you covered.

Q: What happened when Bluebeard the Pirate fell into the Red Sea?

A: He got Marooned.

Q: How much did the pirate pay for his peg-leg and hook?

A: An arm and a leg.

You may not get many chuckles with some of these, but they will earn you a free donut. At Krispy Kreme, you’ll get a free donut for talking like a pirate — and a free dozen donuts if you dare to dress like one.

Google Maps lists Talk Like a Pirate Day events happening all over the world today.

Even if you’re the only one dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow at the office, you’re probably not the only one humming “Professional Pirate” while you work.

Just remember: It’s easier to talk like a pirate than fight like a pirate.
