Simple test tells you if it's too hot to walk your dog

With summer in full force - in some parts of Canada at least - dogs are in full ”play outside” mode. While it’s tempting to slap on a leash and take your furry friend for a long walk, there’s a simple test you can administer to make sure your dog isn’t going to be melting in the summer sun.

A post from Moon Valley Canine Training, a dog training centre in California, has taken off on Tumblr, thanks in part to its simplicity.

The post has been shared almost 40,000 times on Tumblr, and over 100,000 times on Facebook, where many people have been marveling at the genius of the tip.

People laugh at me when I carry my dog from the car instead of letting her walk on the Florida sun heated pavement. If I can't walk barefoot on it, I won't let her either!!! - Anna McWilliams, Orlando, FL

And some dogs seem to be appreciative that their owners finally figured it out.

My Cocker is usually not the freshest biscuit in the box but when it comes to hot pavement she just plain won't walk on it. She turns around and walks back to the front door. "No walks today unless you want to carry me." - Steve Taylor, Sacramento CA

With Canada Day approaching, police are also getting in on the canine safety act, with authorities telling merrymakers to leave their dogs home for the day. Canines, crowds and hot weather isn't a mix worth celebrating.
