Stephen Colbert interviews Eminem on Only in Monroe

Only in Monroe Juy 2015

A local public access TV show with no studio audience and broadcasting to around 20,000 people got a major guest on their show recently. At first it’s hard to believe the video is even real.

Future CBS Late Show host Stephen Colbert temporarily filled in as a host on Michigan’s Only in Monroe and interviewed rapper Eminem in an episode that aired on Wednesday.

The full show is over 40 minutes long and was posted on YouTube by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert account. Colbert first interviews the actual hosts of the show and even has his own news report segment, pausing for laughter after he jokes to an empty studio.

Skipping 20 minutes into the video, Colbert introduces his next guest: “A local Michigander who is making a name for himself in the competitive world of music,” also known as Marshall Mathers.

Eminem takes a seat across from Colbert for an interview.

Things start off awkwardly with some Bob Seger tunes. Colbert quizzes the rapper on the songs and hums a few other ones including “Against the World.” Eminem appears to be confused throughout the segment and at one point tells Colbert he is.

But it’s all fun and games. Colbert even comments on Eminem having a cute face and asks him to take off his hoodie. Things eventually turn around and get a little more serious when Colbert asks Eminem about the influence rap has on kids that listen to the music.

Eminem turns to the camera and tells all the rappers that they don’t have to use bad language and to watch their mouths.

The funniest moment is when Colbert manages to get a second career choice out of the rapper. But Eminem plays along and tells him that: “Carpentry sounds like it could be good.”

All jokes aside, the video has already racked up nearly three million views. Colbert will be stepping into his CBS hosting gig in early September, taking over for David Letterman.
