Substitute teacher high on heroin passes out in class

Students at a Pennsylvania school received a persuasive anti-drug demonstration this week when their teacher, high on heroin, passed out in front of the class.

CBS Pittsburgh reported 11 students sat in the classroom at a Northgate School District school when their substitute teacher passed out after leaving for a break. Sgt. Mike Hudson, a school resource officer, told the broadcaster administrators woke the teacher up and then found four small bags of heroin in his pocket as well as marijuana in his car.

Christopher Chiappetta, 26, faces multiple drug charges and a charge for "endangering the welfare of children," CBS reported. Police told media he admitted to using heroin in the morning, before school.

Besides rehab, he probably needs more training as an educator to learn that demonstrations aren't always the best way to teach lessons, particularly lessons about severe drug addiction.

A teacher's aide in Wisconsin was also arrested on heroin drug charges this summer after police said she had her drugs delivered to a preschool, according to ABC News.

On Oct. 17 of last year, Damian Esteban, a teacher at high school in New York City was arrested for trying to bring heroin into a courthouse where he was serving jury duty. Esteban was fired from his teaching job but the case made splashing headlines into this year, when a judge ruled his termination was unfair, "excessive and shocking," the New York Times reported.

The Department of Education didn't agree; a spokesperson said last month it would appeal the decision on the grounds that a teacher who carries heroin into court probably shouldn't teach kids.
