A restless farm animal seeking a lifestyle change discovered last week that it isn't so easy to convert from land cow to sea cow.

The cow on Galveston Island in Texas took a stroll along the beach on Wednesday, after escaping its owner's property and somehow became stranded on a sand bar about 400 metres from land, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Every cow might be an island, but this bovine wasn't destined for a solitary life at sea. A resident called 911 and told police about the cow, and beach patrol arrived to rescue the lost cow, the Chronicle reported.

Peter Davis, the local beach patrol chief, said the cow had walked out to the sand bar at low tide. Getting the cow to moo-ve back to shore was more difficult. Davis told the newspaper rescuers were yelling at the cow to shoo until it finally began to walk, then they guided it to safety with its owner.

While cows don't typically wander into open water, there have been recent cases of sea animals making unsuccessful attempts at life on land.

A sea lion in Brazil discovered it wasn't fit for the bustling city in March after it blocked traffic for about 20 minutes, according to the Telegraph. The sea lion did use the cross-walk.

Later in March, Phys.org reported a hunter found and saved a seal pup in a Swedish forest, lost nearly six kilometres from water.
