Texas man says he was struck by lightning twice during the same storm

Texan Casey Wagner likes to be outside, getting muddy during off-road competitions, such as the one he attended this weekend when two bolts of lightning zapped through his body.

CBSDFW.com reported the 31-year-old was attending the Rednecks with Paychecks event in Saint Jo, Texas on Saturday when a storm rolled in, sending Wagner and his friends under a tree for shelter. Wagner told the broadcaster he felt a zap to his right boot, fell to his knees and then felt another jolt through his chest and out his wrist.

He was rushed to the hospital and tested for injuries. The next day, Wagner said he felt shaky, like his body had fallen asleep, but he was otherwise okay. He told CBS he thanked God for saving him, and he was planning to attend church more often.

National Geographic puts the odds of being struck by lightning in a lifetime at 1 in 3,000, with about 10 per cent of victims killed. The odds of being struck twice depend on many factors — like if someone is always outside — but suffice to stay, Wagner is a lucky fellow.

A Saskatchewan woman, Shelley Kessel, said she was struck by lightning for the second time in her life this summer. She told the Canadian Press she was driving when she saw a bright flash, the trunk popped open and the car lights started flashing.

A Virginian park ranger named Roy Sullivan is in the history books for reportedly having been struck by lightning seven times over the course of his life.
