Think you’re ‘hot’? The U.S. State Department might not agree

The State Department wants you to know if you’re not hot at home, you’re not going to be magically hot abroad.

In a now deleted tweet, the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs wrote, “Not a ‘10’ in the US? Then not a 10 overseas. Beware of being lured into buying expensive drinks or worse—being robbed. #springbreakendingbadly”

Ouch.

After accused of being sexist, the State Department denied those claims, tweeting “we made no mention of gender. This can happen to anyone unfortunately.”

The original tweet was bombarded with mixed bag of reviews, from some people loving the suggestion, others hating it. And of course, like most things on the Internet, came the parody accounts.

One account tweeted “if you’re not a ‘10’ in the United States, consider whether travel is really going to fill the void inside you.”

After deleting the tweet, the State Department apologized, saying “some have been offended by our earlier tweet and we apologize that it came off negatively. We see many Americans fall victim to scams each year and want all to be careful while traveling.”
