Toronto’s crumbling streets dominate CAA list of Ontario’s worst roads

The CAA list is aimed at drawing attention to the worst roads in Ontario.

It's public shaming day for Ontario authorities that can't seem to get their asphalt together and repair the crumbling, potholed streets of the province's worst roads.

The CAA's list of Top 10 Worst Roads, released today, once again honours Toronto's Dufferin Street with the top spot, or more accurately, the very bottom. Four other Toronto roads also made the list:

  1. Dufferin Street (Toronto)

  2. Burlington Street East (Hamilton)

  3. Finch Avenue West (Toronto)

  4. Kraft Creek Road (Timmins)

  5. Bayview Avenue (Toronto)

  6. Lawrence Avenue East (Toronto)

  7. Wharncliffe Road South (London)

  8. Bouvier Road (Clarence-Rockland)

  9. Carling Avenue (Ottawa)

  10. Stanley Avenue (Niagara Falls)

Dufferin Street has made the CAA's list seven times in different years, with residents calling it "a disgrace," according to a campaign press release.

The CAA's campaign is intended to convince the provincial government to spend a higher proportion of gas taxes on repairing roads and bridges.

The unscientific process of choosing the worst roads is done by popular vote, which might explain why Canada's largest city is getting most of the criticism, but towns in northern Ontario have largely managed to avoid the spotlight, aside from Timmins.

Fear not, local radio in Sudbury has gone on the hunt to document potholes, even recording video as residents attempt perilous drives through ankle-deep puddles.
