Toronto man getting working iPhone back after boy finds it in water

The boy, 9, picked up the soaked phone, put it in rice, found the rightful owner and emailed him

When a Toronto beach-goer lost his iPhone near the Toronto Islands he never thought he'd see it again.

"After a great day at the beach you can imagine how heartbroken I was when I realized that I had accidentally taken my iPhone 4S for a swim," writes the man who is only identified as Ryan in an email to a nine-year-old boy named Julian.

What brought the two together was one resilient phone and Julian's desire to have an iPhone of his own.

According to a post on Reddit, Julian found the phone in the waters off Centre Island and put the phone in rice.

The phone somehow managed to work again and wasn't damaged. Julian wanted to keep the phone, but his parents insisted he they try to find the owner. So his mom took a peek at an email, found Ryan's address and Julian sent the email.

"My mom peeked at an email from Holt Renfrew. It was my Mom's idea and my Dad's idea, NOT MINE, because I wanted to keep the phone!" reads the email.

Ryan sent the email to a friend, who posted it on Reddit and since then the comments have been pouring in, mostly praising the parents.

"Wow that is awesome! Cool kid, great parents," reads one comment.

"That is how you raise a kid," reads another.

Ryan wrote back to Julian thanking him.

"This is AMAZING news and you are an amazing kid for being so thoughtful and honest," he wrote. "Frankly I never expected to see it again and am also impressed it's not damaged."

Now Julian's thoughtfulness isn't going unrecognized.

Ryan asked on Reddit if anyone knew of a good gift for a nine-year-old and from an email it appears he settled on a $50 MasterCard gift card.
