Tory MPs deliver uninspiring rendition of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas

The federal Conservatives' foray into the social media sphere has been a bumpy one, to say the least.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's "A day in the life" series on Twitter was pretty good, but his 24/7 video series has given a new definition to dull.

And while some MPs have taken advantage of the new tools available to them to talk directly to constituents, others have engaged in messy Twitter wars and unfortunate gaffes.

The party's latest attempt to relate with the hip kids of the Millennial generation without alienating their core Baby Boom voters is a video in which Harper and members of the National Conservative Caucus recite the holiday poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," released Wednesday on YouTube.

With drowning background music, a disconcerting yellow-red hue and digitally-fake snow (um ... inside the Parliament building?) one would think with all the expendable taxpayer money at their disposal the production value might be a titch higher. After all, the Tories are quite familiar with using tax dollars to promote the party's initiatives.

But if the idea was to make the PM look more approachable by having him resemble a 10-year-old kid with a giant book, then kudos. Because Harper's performance is among the better ones in this video, certain to frighten Canadian children from coast to coast to coast.

Jason Kenney clearly needs a lesson in iambic pentameter. Chris Alexander appears to be an excitable dad who really isn't quite sure what he's doing. And despite his enthusiasm, Peter Kent comes off more like the Canadian Tire Scrooge character than a heartwarming storyteller.

Other MPs, like Stella Ambler and Leona Aglukkaq, clearly wish they were doing something – anything – else.

One thing's for sure, though – we can't wait for the NDP or Liberal attempts to top it.
