Twenty-one people set themselves on fire for charity, world record

21 people in Cleveland set new Guinness World Record for most people lit on fire at same time

Ambition and a worthy cause lit a fire in their hearts, and so 21 people in Ohio lit fire to themselves on Saturday in a world record-breaking stunt.

Wives lit fire to husbands, a mayoral candidate burned and a radio host went up in flames in Cleveland this weekend, during an event that raised money for charity and broke the world record for the most people performing "full body burns" at the same time, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

But no one was hurt during the making of this record; the participants were layered in clothing and covered in a special gel that protected them from harm.

The Plain-Dealer reported the participants, lit into balls of fire, walked around for 32 seconds before helpers doused them in fire extinguisher fluid. Firefighters, police and EMS were on scene, but while a few people told the newspaper they were starting to sweat during the burn, no one was injured.

A Guinness World Record representative confirmed the burn broke the last full body burn record, which was set in Ohio by 17 people who stayed on fire for 43.9 seconds in 2009.

The burn raised money for the local food bank and the non-profit Brick by Brick.
