New York peacock ‘writes’ hilarious tweets after escaping from zoo

A peacock that fled New York's Central Park Zoo Tuesday is back home now, but not until it enjoyed an exciting day on the town 'tweeting'.

And the bird had a lot to say about New York. Similar to other zoo fugitives like the Bronx Zoo cobra and peahen, the peacock quickly began its 15 minutes of social media fame.

The two-year-old bird flew the coop Tuesday around 9 a.m. and perched on a fifth-floor window ledge at an upscale Upper East Side building.

Maybe the peacock was looking to move on up to the east side? If that was the case, it certainly picked a nice location. A condo reportedly sold in the building for $22.5 million in 2009.

Shortly after the peacock fled, it began tweeting under the names @BirdOnTheTown and @CentralPeacock.

"Hey, I'm free!!" it began on @BirdOnTheTown. "Who is Alexander McQueen and why is this line so long?"

The bird was also looking for an apartment with high ceilings and wondering how to score tickets to the Book of Mormon.

"@todayshow Any chance a bird can get a few drinks with @klgandhoda?" writes @CentralPeacock hoping to go on the NBC morning show.

The two accounts combined gained thousands of followers during the day and Tweeted almost every minute.

"Our staff monitored the bird through the night, and at 6:45 a.m., he flew back on his own," said zoo director Jeff Sailer in a statement. Zoo officials hoped the peacock would fly home on its own and did not try to capture it.

While officials say the peacock is back at the zoo, @CentralPeacock disagrees while showing the bird is a fan of Sean Connery being impersonated on Saturday Night Live Jeopardy! skits. "100% Correct: I'm off the ledge as of 6:45 am. 100% Incorrect: I'm back at the zoo. Undetermined: I'm with your mother, Trebek."

The peacock is far from the first escaped animal to tweet. The Bronx Zoo cobra is still tweeting to her 229,000 followers and the turtles that caused the JFK airport delays are still tweeting.
