5 royal family highlights of 2015 including Trudeau-Queen reunion
Adorable babies, giggles from the Queen and sweet tweets from Canada’s prime minister — while the royals haven’t been making headlines constantly this year, it was still a pretty busy 365 days.
Trudeau and the Queen
When newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met the Queen on Nov. 25, he joked she was “much taller than me the last time we met.”
The Queen laughed and said, “Well, this is extraordinary to think of, isn’t it?”
Trudeau had last met Queen Elizabeth when he was a boy when his father, Pierre Trudeau, was prime minister.
After a Commonwealth dinner, she tweeted, “Thank you, @JustinTrudeau, for making me feel so old!”
But Justin Trudeau responded with a sweet message, saying, “On the contrary, you are forever young. I was honoured to toast your lifetime of service tonight.”
Queen becomes longest serving monarch
On Sept. 9, Queen Elizabeth became the longest serving British monarch with 23,226 days, surpassing her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. In a brief statement that day, the 89-year-old Elizabeth said the record was “not one to which I have ever aspired.” That day, however, was treated like any other, with the Queen helping to open a new railway.
Princess Charlotte is born
It’s a girl! On May 2, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a daughter. Princess Charlotte is the second child for Kate and Prince William. Soon after the birth, big brother Prince George arrived at the hospital, waving to media cameras and looking adorable. In June, photos of the royal siblings taken by Kate were released by the royal family, showing George giving Charlotte a kiss while holding her.
Prince Harry finishes military duties
In a “tough decision,” Prince Harry left the British army in June. In his military career, Capt. Harry Wales did two tours in Afghanistan and became an accomplished Apache helicopter pilot. Now, the single royal is focusing on his charity work, including his work with wounded warriors and spending the summer in Africa, as well as his royal duties.
After 68 years of marriage …
It is pretty adorable to watch an older couple make each other laugh. In November, Prince Philip donned his full ceremonial uniform — complete with large fur hat, which made him look like a guard outside Buckingham Palace — and stood waiting for his wife to walk by. When she did and got a glimpse of the “guard” on duty, she cracked up. The photo went viral.
