Alicia Silverstone takes on Stephen Harper as part of PETA’s anti-seal hunt campaign

Alicia Silverstone may not have noticed that Stephen Harper had a few other things on his mind this week during his run for re-election.

Nonetheless, the actress best known for her role in "Clueless" has stepped up to encourage her blog readers to ask the prime minister to stop the "seal slaughter."

Silverstone previously displayed support for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals by posing as nude as legally possible for a 2007 advertisement where she touted her own vegetarianism.

Getting more political, however, has led to comments that point out how unrealistic PETA expectations might be when it comes to Canada's North.

"I personally can try and do my best to limit my impact upon the Earth by choosing not to eat animals because this is an option available to me," offered one respondent, "but there are some places where a plant-based diet cannot work."

And another reaction, posted by a First Nations woman who lives a vegan lifestyle herself, pointed out to Silverstone it's not as simple as it might seem. After all, her own father participates in the annual moose hunt.

"I think you are not seeing the whole picture of what it really means for indigenous cultures to be able to practice their traditions freely," wrote Alisha Sweezey. "I can guarantee you, that whatever profits are being made by seal hunting, is not benefitting the Inuks whatsoever.

"In fact, if anything, it's actually giving the Northern Indigenous community a bad name, and thus having a negative effect on their way of life."

PETA last targeted Harper during the 2010 Winter Olympics, when Pamela Anderson, accompanied by a seal mascot, delivered 500,000 petition signatures to the Vancouver office of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

The organization concurrently advocated throwing a pie in the prime minister's face, albeit virtually.

Protesters dressed in fake, bloodied seal costumes were taken away by police outside September 2009 visits by Harper to New York City and Washington, D.C. A pledge to boycott Canadian maple syrup was also offered by PETA to draw attention to the seal hunt.

Still, nothing succeeds for PETA quite like sex appeal, even though Silverstone might be a bit more modest this year, as she awaits the birth of her first child.
