Calgary flood infographic illustrates the city’s plight

The City of Calgary has released an infographic that illustrates the devastation of the recent flood that shut down the downtown core and forced mass evacuations in nearby areas.

Broken down into four parts — the flood, fallout, response, and recovery — the infographic highlights the extent of the damage, as well as the city's incredible recovery efforts.

One of the more staggering revelations; the Bow River's flow peaked at eight times its regular flow, approximately three times that of the flood in 2005. The flow of the Elbow River was even worse, peaking at twelve times its regular rate.

The flood waters forced the evacuations of twenty-six communities, affecting more than 100,000 Calgarians and cutting power in 34,000 locations across town.

More than 75 per cent of the road network was restored within the first seven days of recovery, which is impressive when you factor in more than a thousand kilometres of downtown roads that were swept away during the flood.
