Edmonton ‘shock’ website owner charged for hosting Luka Magnotta video

Luka Magnotta is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jun Lin

It was one of the most shocking and horrifying recorded incidences of alleged torture and murder in Canadian history, and now a company that helped spread the video online is facing charges.

The death of Montreal's Jun Lin captured the attention of the world last year and the arrest of suspect Luka Magnotta, in a German internet cafe on June 4, 2012, put an end to weeks of public fear and outrage.

Montreal police allege Magnotta tortured and murdered Lin while videotaping the entire affair. A video depicting the series of events was posted online on May 25, well before a murder investigation was launched.

The hosting site, bestgore.com is known as a "shock website" that hosts disturbing videos and pictures. The video, called "1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick," reportedly shows Lin being sliced open and eventually murdered. Pieces of his body were later mailed to political offices in Ottawa and schools in Vancouver.

Edmonton police announced on Wednesday Mark Marek, 38, the owner and operator of bestgore.com, has been charged with corrupting morals. He will appear in court for a bail hearing on Thursday.

“It is alleged that Marek posted the video online in Edmonton, knowing the video that was sent to him by Luka Magnotta was depicting a real murder,” Staff Sgt. Bill Clark said in a statement.

Edmonton police also stated they could lay further charges.
