Five dead in Calgary house party stabbing held as school year ends

We are learning more about Matthew de Grood, the man charged with killing 5 students at a Calgary house party on Tuesday

Five people are dead and one is in custody following a stabbing at a Calgary house party overnight, according to police.

The Calgary Police Service told the Globe and Mail they were called to a home in the city's northwestern neighbourhood of Brentwood at about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, where some university students had been holding a large gathering.

Police say five people were found suffering from stab wounds. Three were declared dead and the scene and two others died in hospital. The victims were all believed to be four young men and one woman, all apparently university aged.

One suspect was taken into custody after a brief police pursuit. Police say he was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The stabbings occurred at a home on the 100 block of Butler Crescent, a short distance from University of Calgary campus. Neighbours told Postmedia News that the home had been rented to university students, who were celebrating the end of the school year.

The University of Calgary Students' Union also held a "Bermuda Shorts Day" on campus, Monday afternoon.
