John Oliver show mistakes House of Commons for House of Lords

If John Oliver’s frequent references to this country are anything to go by, the host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” loves Canada.

And Canada loves John Oliver, even if he does give us a good slagging once in a while. But this time he went too far.

In a segment on his Sunday show, Oliver, a Brit, took issue with the opulence of the U.K.’s House of Lords.

He was referring to a recent move by the upper chamber of parliament to reject Prime Minister David Cameron’s cuts to tax credits that most say will inordinately affect lower income earners. Like Canada’s Senate, the House of Lords is made up of appointees — many of them titled peers who are among the country’s wealthiest citizens.

“Yes, the House of Lords told David Cameron he was being too hard on poor people,” Oliver says.

Flashing photos of the chamber’s interior, Oliver continues: “A place that looks like this, where lords and baronesses sit on fancy red benches and a man wields a giant golden mace whose only practical purpose appears to be smashing peasants.”

Except that the photos were of Canada’s House of Commons, and the man holding the mace was none other than national hero Kevin Vickers, the former sergeant-at-arms who helped end Michael Zehaf-Bibeau’s deadly shooting spree at Parliament Hill a year ago.

The show wasn’t immediately available for comment.
