One dead, one injured in Toronto’s Little Italy after midday shooting
One person is dead following a brazen shooting in Toronto's Little Italy as fans gathered to watch Italy play Ireland in a Euro Cup soccer match.
Toronto police say shots were fired at around 3:30 in the afternoon at the Sicilian Cafe near College St. and Ossington Ave. A second person was rushed to hospital with abdominal injuries sustained in the shooting.
According to the Globe and Mail, a total of five shots were fired. Police have closed off part of the street to investigate.
Police have released a description of the suspect who is believed to have fled the scene on foot wearing a white construction helmet, an orange safety vest and a white filter mask. The male suspect is described as being six-feet tall, having a medium build and blond hair.
Nearby Montrose Junior Public School and Delta Alternative Senior were placed in hold-and-secure following the gunfire, but that was lifted after about 45 minutes.
Italy won the match 2-0 to qualify for the quarterfinals of Euro Cup 2012.
