Posters promoting “white student union” removed from Totonro university campus

Toronto daystarter: Friday, Oct. 2, 2015

Posters put up around Ryerson’s campus promoting a so-called White Student Union are promptly being removed.

According to a Twitter photo snapped by National Post columnist Christie Blatchford near the Bloor University of Toronto campus, the posters show two white men in parkas looking into the distance, with the CN Tower in the background. The text “White Student Union!” and the group’s website is also displayed prominently on the flyer. The posters were also spotted around Ryerson’s campus, but have since been taken down.

“This morning before 9 a.m., I was notified that there were offensive posters around campus,” Ryerson spokesman Michael Forbes told Yahoo Canada News. “We notified campus security and campus facilities so that an investigation could begin and the posters could be taken down.”

Administrators at Ryerson used Twitter to advise students to notify the school’s helpdesk by phone, e-mail or Twitter if they find signs so they could be removed as quickly as possible.

In order to post signage around campus, Forbes explained that a student group has to be sanctioned by the student union, or must represent a Ryerson department, and “clearly this group isn’t representing either.”

“I can 100 percent confirm this isn’t a Ryerson group, they are not affiliated with Ryerson and we do not condone them or their signs,” he said.

Anyone with information is being encouraged to contact campus security.

The group’s website includes the following three points in its mission statement:

1. To genuinely explore ethnic and cultural politics in a forum which does not exclude rightist or conservative perspectives.

2. To organize for and advance the interests of Western peoples.

3. To promote and celebrate Western Civilisation.

The website also includes a YouTube video titled Multiculturalism and Marxist Bias in Academia, which features an interview with Canadian historical sociologist and professor, Ricardo Duchesne, who, the website stresses, is not a member or affiliated with the group.

The website also features an editorial titled York Needs A White Students Union!, which was rejected from being printed in the school’s student newspaper.

The group has not responded to a request for comment.
