Quebec City, Vancouver and Victoria make Conde Nest Traveller’s list of best cities

Sydney, Florence and Charleston, S.C. round out the top three

Three Canadian cities have made the top 20 list of the world's best cities as decided by travellers.

The study conducted by U.S. luxury travel magazine, Conde Nast Traveller, put Quebec City at number six, Vancouver at nine and Victoria at 17.

Taking the top three spots this year were Sydney, Australia, Florence, Italy and Charleston, S.C.

This is the 16th straight year Sydney has topped the list.

"It's sophisticated, international, even edgy," says senior editor Lisa Gill while appearing on the TODAY show. In addition to the warm climate well suited for using the city's 37 beaches, she says there is a "thriving" arts community and "unparalleled" dining.

Charleston, S.C. took the top U.S. spot away from San Francisco and according to Gill this is due to friendliness. "Southern hospitality goes a long way," she says to the TODAY show.

The magazine polled more than 28,000 readers who cast a combined eight million votes on everything from best cities to islands, cruise lines, airlines, hotels and resorts worldwide.

"The demand for excellence in travel has never been higher, and the results of the 2011 Readers' Choice Awards reflect the most exacting standards by the world's most discerning travellers - the readers of Conde Nast Traveller," says editor-in-chief Klara Glowczewska in a statement.

In addition to Canada having some desired cities, three Canadian places made the top 100 list of best travel experiences in the world.

The King Pacific Lodge in British Columbia was voted as the 16th best experience. The Langdon Hall Country House Hotel and Spa in Cambridge, Ont. came in 42nd and Auberge Saint-Antoine in Quebec City placed 84th.

Readers voted the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong as the world's best hotel.

No Canadian airline made the lists for best foreign airline or best small airline. Singapore Airlines was voted the best.
