An Italian couple visiting Toronto nearly missed their Hawaiian honeymoon after a massive road sign collapsed in front of their car, but the quick work and benevolence of Toronto Fire Services helped the couple catch their flight to paradise.

CP24 reports that a luxury SUV crashed into a pole along the freeway early Friday morning, collapsing a huge overhead sign that spanned at least five lanes of traffic.

The driver fled the scene on foot but was arrested nearby. Oh yeah. And the sign, which had to be cut into pieces to be removed, closed the highway for much of the day. So pretty much everything went by the book.

The one bright spot in the whole affair was the outgoing efforts of the Toronto firefighters who responded to the scene.

According to Toronto Fire's Stephan Powell, a rental car containing an Italian couple on honeymoon crashed into the sign, leaving the couple stranded and destined to miss the flight to Hawaii.

The time-sensitivity of their situation was captured by two Italian-speaking crew members, and the couple was rushed by truck to a nearby fire hall. They managed to meet a taxi and made it to the airport on time.

Thanks to the assistance of Toronto fire crews, the couple escaped its dalliance with a fallen Toronto street sign without missing the most romantic weekend of their lives.

You could say that this is a ... sign of Toronto's commitment to great customer service. You shouldn't, because that is a terrible pun and terrible puns have no place in society. But credit is definitely due.

"We are a service organization and whenever we can help people we will," Powell simply told Yahoo Canada News about going out of their way to help the visitors.

Good on you, Toronto Fire. There are two Italian honeymooners in Hawaii that think very highly of Toronto at this moment.
