Victoria named Canada’s most romantic city

While Victoria might have a fusty reputation as the retirement capital of Canada, a new poll suggests it’s also a place where love is far from dead.

According to Amazon.ca, Victoria tops its list when it comes to Most Romantic City in Canada. This marks the fourth consecutive year B.C.’s seemingly sleepy capital city has taken the title.

The findings aren’t based on how many times a week Canadians confess their love or how many romantic picnics they attend each year. Instead, the results relate to the website’s sales of sexual wellness products, romance and relationships books, romantic comedies and romantic music on a per capita basis in cities with more than 80,000 residents. In other words, Victorians buy a lot of products with sentimental value.

North Vancouver, Waterloo, Vancouver and Saskatoon rounded out the top of the list, while Canada’s largest cities Toronto and Montreal don’t appear at all.

Before any passion-deprived Torontonians up and leave for the quaint city, one relationship expert suggests not to take the poll so literally.

Vancouver-based relationship counsellor Stephanie Byrne says that just because people in Victoria are ordering books like “Fifty Shades of Grey” in large quantities, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re romantically satisfied.

“Maybe it proves that they’re a bit lonely, or there’s not enough services for singles there,” she tells Yahoo Canada News. “That’s why they’re looking online for products to set aside those needs. Realistically, why do we buy romantic books? Is it because we’re romantically fulfilled?”

She suspects that Toronto and Montreal being left off the list means that people in those populated cities have plenty of opportunity to find romantic contentment with other humans, rather than products bought online.

“There’s a lot of beautiful people there. Maybe all the beautiful people are getting together,” she laughs.

The other cities that round out the list include Calgary, Kingston, Oakville, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Kelowna, Regina, Red Deer, Nanaimo, Winnipeg, London, Langley, Kitchener and Kamloops.
