Canadian women's soccer team on another collision course with Team USA

Canada and world champion U.S. could well be headed to a finals showdown that would guarantee both a spot in the 2016 Olympics women’s soccer tournament.

Monday’s draw for the CONCACAF regional Olympic qualifying tournament in Texas in February placed Canada in a group with Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemala and Guyana that will be based in Houston and play out of BBVA Compass Stadium, home to the MLS Dynamo.

"It'll come down to striving to win your group and then your destiny is in your hands," Canada head coach John Herdman said on a post-draw conference call. “We’re the strongest team in the group - we should be. It’s ours to lose.”

Canada opens group play Feb. 11 against Guyana, and follows with matches against T&T on Feb. 14 and Guatemala on Feb. 16.

The two finalists in the eight-team tournament qualify for the Games in Brazil in August. The defending World Cup champion United States opens the tournament Feb. 10 against Costa Rica, and then finishes group play with matches against Mexico and Puerto Rico.

The tournament semifinals are scheduled for Feb. 19 and the final Feb. 21 in Houston.
