Risk of freezing rain for commuters across southern Ontario

This morning's commute could be treacherous for anyone on the roads in parts of central and northern Ontario, as a storm system pushing across the province brings a chance of freezing rain until around midday.

Environment Canada has issued freezing rain warnings for regions along the shores of Georgian Bay, from Peterborough down to the eastern shores of Lake Ontario and up through Algonquin Park. Regions of northern Ontario from Sault Ste. Marie to North Bay are also affected. Motorists travelling in these areas are advised to "be prepared for hazardous winter driving conditions as untreated surfaces may suddenly become icy and slippery."

Since the exact location of the 'freezing line' for this storm system was uncertain as it continues to develop, the warning regions have migrated from southwestern to central Ontario throughout the night. As the day progresses and the storm presses further north, these warning areas may continue to shift to adapt to changing conditions. Areas of the province in far eastern Ontario, around Ottawa and Cornwall, could also see patchy freezing rain this morning, but more persistent freezing rain could develop tonight.

Temperatures are expected to warm up enough by midday in that any freezing rain that does develop should switch over to rain showers for this afternoon. These showers will change over to drizzle tonight across much of southern Ontario, and the warming trend is expected to continue throughout the night, pushing temperatures even higher by Thursday morning.
