Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley Adopt — Again!
Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley's family has expanded! The actress and her singer-husband announced Wednesday that they have adopted a daughter. No further details were immediately available about their new addition.
This is the second child for the couple, who married in 2007. They adopted their daughter, Naleigh, 3, from South Korea in 2009, and the former "Grey's Anatomy" star has been candid about her plans to do it again. "Josh and I started talking about [adoption] before we were even engaged," Heigl, 33, said in Scholastic Parent & Child's February issue. "My sister Meg is Korean, and my parents adopted her three years before I was born. I wanted my own family to resemble the one I came from, so I always knew I wanted to adopt from Korea. We have talked about having biological children as well, but we decided to adopt first. I just wanted to be a mom. So however we do that, it's fine with me. I'd like to adopt again."
Heigl said that Kelley, 32, initially had questions about adoption, but soon embraced the idea after they candidly discussed it. "Anyone who doesn't have experience with adoption wonders: 'Does love for a child come through DNA?'" she told the magazine. "I knew it didn't. My mother had biological children and an adopted child and said it made absolutely no difference. They're yours. You love them the moment they're put into your arms. Josh had to learn that, but he was so gracious and accepting." In fact, he won the girl's heart immediately. "She felt really comfortable with Josh and they bonded quickly. It was harder for me. Our social worker told us that it's pretty typical for kids to react differently to their new mother… My advice is don't be discouraged. The reward is so great."
The couple recently shared a glimpse of their family life in Kelley's video for the song he wrote about their little girl, "Naleigh Moon." The video, which was directed by Heigl, features heartwarming home video footage, from when they first received Naleigh's adoption documents to more recent clips when the happy and adjusted little girl cuddles with her parents.
And don't rule out more children for the proud new parents. During an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show earlier this year, Heigl said a quartet of kids could be a possibility, though they haven't yet decided. "I used to want like six kids and then I went, 'Wow, no thanks,'" she laughed. "So we're thinking maybe like three to four kids. That would be my ideal." When DeGeneres noted that four was still a high number, Heigl replied: "That's still a lot isn't it? All right maybe two."
