17-year-old blind cat reunited with owner after four months missing

Heartwarming reunion in Florida

Maria Elena Colomer lost Sabrina, her 17-year-old blind cat, in April.

At one point during her search for Sabrina, Colomer approached Miami Beach resident Eida Hernandez, who was feeding stray cats in the neighbourhood.

"When a lady passed by looking for her cat, she said [the cat] was blind, old, and the lady looked very sad," Hernandez recalled in Spanish.

"I was crying, and I said, 'She's half blind, I feel horrible, she's 17 years old," Colomer told Fox News.

The South Florida woman continued to search for the frail feline, but when she came across a dead cat that looked like Sabrina, she was convinced her cat was gone for good.

"It was horrible," she told Fox News. "I still have it ingrained in my brain."

Colomer had no idea that she would be reunited with her elderly cat four months later.

Weeks after Sabrina went missing, a teenager found a skinny, old, blind cat wandering near Normandy Isle Park & Pool. Miami Beach Police Officer Mary Jomorron, who is now Miami Beach's first animal resource officer, was notified, and she brought the stray cat, whom they called "Normandy," to Alton Road Animal Hospital.

"She had a growth on the side of her neck," said volunteer Candice Flores. "Her vision was obviously compromised. She looked like a sick, very, very old cat, and we weren't even sure she was going to make it."

In August, Flores and Hernandez teamed up to save some kittens in their neighbourhood. Even with the language barrier — Flores speaks little Spanish, Hernandez speaks little English — Hernandez was able to share the story of the woman looking for her blind cat.

Flores knew which cat she was talking about and contacted Jomorron.

Jomorron used the information Hernandez recalled about Colomer's car to track down the cat's owner.

"She shows me a picture," said Colomer. "She said, 'Is this your cat?' and I go, 'Yes,' and she goes, 'I have her,' and I just started crying."

Colomer and Sabrina were recently reunited.
