The bond between a mom and her baby is unbreakable, and that’s no different when it comes to koalas.

A six-month old koala named Phantom was in his mother’s pouch when they were struck by a car on a highway west of Brisbane, Australia, according to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

Remarkably, baby Phantom — who weighs only 420 grams — wasn’t injured during the accident but his mother, Lizzy, suffered a collapsed lung.

In an incredibly touching turn of events, Phantom clung to his mother, never leaving her side as she underwent surgery at the hospital.

During the entire operation, the baby koala tightly cuddled his unconscious mother. And with the release of several touching photos, Phantom is now touching the hearts of millions online.

The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital posted an update on Lizzy’s condition on Facebook. The mother koala is taking antibiotics and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Lizzy is in recovery and we’re happy to say she is doing well,” said hospital vet nurse Jamie-Lynn Nevers, according to the Courier Mail.

Both Phantom and his mom have been released into the hospital’s outside wards. The team is monitoring the koalas and hopes to send them both back into the wild as soon as possible.

The hospital was founded by Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin and his wife Teri. It has treated over 50, 000 thousand animals since it opened.
