Brotherly love: Young pit bull acts as seeing-eye dog for blind brother

Eight-month-old puppies Jermaine and Jeffrey were found roaming the streets of Philadelphia in early October.

Animal welfare workers quickly realized the dogs were inseparable, in part because Jermaine was acting as Jeffrey's eyes.

Jeffrey is blind and depends on his patient brother to lead him around and to comfort him in new surroundings.

"The unconditional love and devotion these two dogs show is positively inspirational," wrote a Chester County SPCA spokesperson on the group's Facebook page.

The abandoned lab-pit bill mixes were taken in by Operation Ava, a no-kill animal shelter in the city. Shelter workers are hoping to find a loving family that will adopt the puppies as a pair.

"Because of Jeffrey’s blindness, we are keeping the dogs in the shelter until they are adopted. Otherwise the dogs will have to adjust to a new location for a very short period of time, which is a bit more difficult for Jeffrey," shelter officials posted on Operation Ava's site.

"I think this is a little bit extraordinary in my experience because they're so careful with one another and play together so well," Ray Little, director of life saving at Operation Ava, told NBC Philadelphia. "It almost seems like Jermaine understands that Jeffrey has an issue seeing."

"They're always pretty much touching each other," Little added. "Jeffrey really does try to maintain contact with Jermaine, especially when he's in an unfamiliar environment. As soon as he gets familiar with a new place, then he becomes a little bit more independent. But it's amazing how they try to maintain contact with each other."

Since photos of the dogs were posted online last week, the shelter has received countless phone calls and more than 300 emails inquiring about the pups.

As of November 17, the pups were "still waiting patiently at Operation Ava for someone very special to adopt them."
