Calgary good Samaritan returns lost wallet to brand new residents

Maria Claudia Castedo and her husband, Carlos Viera, moved to Calgary from Bolivia just three weeks ago.

Last Monday, Castedo lost her wallet. The 25-year-old dentist accidentally left her wallet on a city bus. It held $1,500 in cash, money she was transferring from a Bolivian account to her new Canadian one.

"We looked everywhere," said Viera, a doctor, also 25.

"I told her at the end maybe someone that really needs the money found it."

Fortunately for the young couple, the person who did find it recognized that it should be returned to its owner.

A woman on the bus Castedo had been riding spotted the wallet and alerted the bus driver, Jack Wyse. Wyse and another transit driver counted the cash and immediately contacted transit officials who then tracked down Castedo.

"We didn't expect that…these people, good people in the world, especially here in Calgary — they deserve all the credit," said Viera. He told the Calgary Sun that in Bolivia, the lost wallet would have been a write-off.

"We're not accustomed to seeing this kind of behaviour."

Wyse, humbled to be part of the happy ending, gives credit to the unidentified good Samaritan who turned in the wallet.
