Cat lost in Montreal airport found four weeks later, will be home soon

No one knows how Chester the cat escaped his cage on May 21, but he did.

That morning, Chester's Montreal breeder dropped him off at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport with Air Canada Live Cargo. Amanda Stewart, Chester's new owner, planned to meet him on the other end of his flight, in Vancouver, B.C.

He didn't arrive.

Two hours after Chester had been dropped off at the airport, Air Canada staff found his carrier, which had been locked and zip-tied, empty. The entire bottom of the cage door was no longer in its place, letting the cat escape.

Stewart started a Facebook page for her missing cat, asking Montrealers to be on the lookout for Chester.

Four weeks after Chester ran off, someone found him at the airport.

"Chester is doing good. No broken bones not even a scratch!!! Blood test has come back good. He is think but not to bad off [sic]. He's resting at the Air Canada employee's home and will be picked up soon by the breeder," Stewart posted on Facebook.

That same Air Canada employee will soon be flying to Vancouver, with Chester on her lap, to ensure the kitten a safe and secure flight to his new home.

This isn't the first time Air Canada lost a pet. At least Chester's story ends on a high note.

Last October, the airline lost an Italian greyhound named Larry in San Francisco when an employee accidentally let him out of his cage. Hours after the dog escaped the airport, he was hit by a car and killed.

And last May, another dog escaped from its kennel during a plane change in Vancouver. The dog, named Niyah, was found at the end of the runway two days later. It had been attacked and killed by an eagle.

"Flying pets in cargo is not safe, ever," Stewart wrote, relieved that her lost-pet story has a much happier ending than most.
