A six-year-old woke up this morning to find her city looking to her to help save a local hero.

A breaking newscast was broadcast in Edmonton this morning, with Sgt. Steve Sharpe explaining that Oiler’s team captain Andrew Ference had been kidnapped.

“If SpiderMable is out there, and you get this message, come down to the mayor’s office and be a part of that team and lead us towards safety and getting our captain back,” Sharpe pleaded.

Of course, Ference is not in danger and the newscast was staged video. Ference is actually hanging out at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, waiting to be saved by his biggest fan and soon to be hero.

The whole scenario had been cooked up by the Children’s Wish Foundation –with help from Edmonton Police, Mayor Don Iveson’s office and other community groups – to help Mable fulfill her dreams of helping others and fighting crime, all in a leotard.

Even Ference’s kids are in on the heroic rescue.

Mable has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells, for two years now. In that time, she delved into the world of comics and developed a fascination with Spider-Man.

The entire adventure has been planned for SpiderMable. She will suit up and head down to the Mayor’s office where she will be instructed by police on how to safely get the Oiler’s captain back. She will be teaming up with the real Spider-Man for maximum arachnid efficiency.

The action packed day is also set to include hero training, various stops around the city to investigate the kidnapping, and finally a celebration to honour Mable’s efforts.
