Glenda, an office manager and single mother from Toronto, recently used a chunk of her savings to take a much-needed vacation with her 14-year-old daughter, Ivy, instead of putting it all into moving into a new home.

The mother-daughter duo flew to Los Angeles for a taping of their favourite show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

When DeGeneres learned that Glenda and Ivy had opted to travel to her show instead of put their hard-earned money toward moving out of Glenda’s mother’s basement, she singled them out during a segment titled “The Last Person Standing Wins Big.”

“You decided this was more important that moving out?” she asked them.

“I hope you all have the same priorities she does,” DeGeneres told her studio audience.

She then surprised Glenda and Ivy with $20,000, courtesy of Shutterfly, so that they could still make the move into their own place.
