Firefighter comforts crash victim amid chaos

A firefighter comforts a young boy.

A firefighter in Mississippi is being applauded after a photo captured him using his smart phone to distract a young crash victim from the chaos surrounding them has gone viral.

D’Iberville’s Casey Lessard arrived on the scene of a car crash where a mother and her five children were driving down the road when their vehicle flipped and crashed.

The photograph shows Lessard lying on the ground beside the four-year-old and comforting him. He propped his smart phone up for the boy to see the animated film about dancing penguins and learned that his favorite colours are yellow and green.

The boy was instantly calmed down by the movie D’Iberville fire captain Darren Peterson told The Sun Herald.

The four-year-old and his sister were in car seats and did not suffer any serious injuries.

The mother and three of her children were taken to hospital with critical injuries. While two are still sedated, the Sun Herald reports all four are on the road to recovery.

Lessard insists he is not a hero.

“I just did my job,” Lessard told the New York Daily News. “I know everyone else in our department would’ve done the same thing.”

The cause of the collision is still being investigated.
