First grader shaves his head in honour of friend going through chemo

Vincent Butterfield shaved his head in support of his first-grade friend Zac Gossage, who lost his hair after going through chemotherapy.

First-grader Vincent Butterfield recently showed up to school with a shaved head.

"I cut it off to make Zac feel like he's not the only one without any hair," the 7-year-old boy told KSDK.

"Zac" is Zac Gossage, Vincent's best friend since kindergarten who is currently battling cancer.

Last June, Zac was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells.

Even with frequent trips to the hospital, Zac rarely missed a day of school at Central Elementary in Union, Missouri, motivated by the fact that he gets "to play with Vincent outside at recess."

When Vincent learned that Zac's treatments were expensive, he sold more than 20 homemade scarves — and contributed more than $200 to Zac's medical bills.

"I sold them so the doctors can fix him," Vincent told TODAY.

And when he learned that Vincent was going to lose his hair during chemotherapy, he voluntarily got rid of his own.

"It made me feel awesome because I wouldn’t be the only one with no hair," said Zac.

"Vincent is like that. He’s a compassionate little boy. When he sets his mind to it, he does it," Vincent's mother, Karen Butterfield, told TODAY.

"I'm grateful that he has such an amazing friend," said Zac's mother, Stacy Tooley.

When a reporter asked Vincent to define friendship, his response reflected a wisdom beyond his years:

"A beautiful thing," he answered.
