The Force is with him: Reykjavik major wears Jedi costume to vote in election

Jon Gnarr, mayor of Reykjavik, Iceland's capital city, made quite the fashion statement when he cast his vote in a parliamentary election last Saturday: he dressed as a Jedi.

A photo of Gnarr voting in his Star Wars best was posted to Reddit.

Gnarr, a former punk rocker, actor and comedian, has been mayor since 2010. He founded the Best Party — described as a "satirical political party that parodied Icelandic politics" — in 2009 as a joke. He had no political experience at the time.

He won the city council election six months later.

"No one has to be afraid of the Best Party because it is the best party. If it wasn’t, it would be called the 'Worst Party' or the 'Bad Party.' We would never work with a party like that," he said in his acceptance speech.

Dubbed "the most interesting mayor in the world," Gnarr still insists he's not a politician. He frequently dresses up in costumes and in drag. He connects with his constituents through social media.

And even with his unconventional approach to his job — some accuse him of not taking his position seriously — he has been in office longer that the last seven mayors before him. Maybe he's doing something right.

His advice for other world leaders?

"Be yourself. Don't be evil. Show a little empathy."
