Forensic experts recover blind author’s chapter when her pen runs out

Trish Vickers, 59, wrote 26 pages of her novel's first chapter when her son noticed she was writing without ink.

Vickers, who is blind, had been writing on pages without realizing her pen had run out.

"We battled with various ideas until we thought of the police," Vickers told Bridport and Lyme Regis News. "We rang them and asked to speak to their fingerprint section. They said if there was anything they could do they would be happy to help. I was gobsmacked and so happy."

Forensic experts with the Dorset Police chose to help Vickers recover her words, using a system of lights to help decipher the indentations on the paper. After five months of working on Vickers' novel during their spare time and lunch breaks, the experts returned the fully recovered work to the grateful author.

"I am so happy, pleased and grateful. It was really, really nice of them and I want to thank them for helping me out," Vickers said of the kind deed.

Vickers is continuing to write her novel, called "Grannifer's Legacy," with the police department waiting to read more:

"Everybody who has read it so far seems to like it and the police also said they enjoyed the bit they read and can't wait for the rest," she said.
