In Fresno, California, good Samaritans rescue man from burning building

Stranger saves man from fire in Fresno, California

On Saturday morning, three strangers helped save a man from a burning California duplex.

Beth Lederach was driving through the Fresno neighbourhood on Saturday when she spotted the flames. She pulled over, called 911, and rushed to the scene.

There she met Roberta Denise Francis, a distraught woman who said that her 73-year-old father, Robert Wells, was trapped inside.

Francis had successfully rescued her baby grandson from the burning home, but couldn’t help her father.

"Number one my grandson, getting him out alive was the number one thing that I had to deal with. The second one, of course, was getting my father out," Francis told KFSN.

"I said, ‘Oh, my God. We have to get him out of there,’" Lederach recalled.

Lederach captured the scary scene on her cell phone camera — including an incredible rescue.

As neighbours tried in vain to control the flames with garden hoses, three strangers approached the home.

A few seconds later — and just moments after an explosion was heard — one of the unidentified men emerged from the back of the home, carrying Wells over his shoulder, with the other two men running alongside them.

"I wasn’t going fast enough, so a guy picked me up and carried me out there. He was kind of in a half a run," Wells recalled.

"I couldn’t believe it," Lederach told the Fresno Bee. “I was so relieved, I just wanted to cry.”

The unnamed Good Samaritan was treated for smoke inhalation.

Wells hopes his hero will soon be identified so he can thank him for saving his life.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart, that I made it out," said Wells.

"I would do it again, 100 per cent," Michael Alcala, one of the men who helped rescue Wells from the flames, told ABC News. The two other rescuers remain unidentified in the press.

Everyone escaped the burning home.

"People just stepped up to give their co-operation, compassion and courage to help out," Lederach told the New York Daily News. ”It was pretty amazing.”
