In support of 9-year-old Girl Scout shot on the job, cookie orders pour in

Earlier this month, 9-year-old Sinai Miller was shot in the leg as she left her apartment to deliver cookies with her fellow Girl Scouts.

Fortunately, the bullet missed bone and artery and didn’t do any major physical damage to the Indianapolis girl.

Because she is unable to sell cookies door-to-door until her leg fully recovers, the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana set up an online cookie drive, called Cookies for Sinai, to help Sinai reach her selling goals.

People from all over the country were quick to rally in support, placing “an overwhelming number” of cookie orders under Sinai’s name, making the young girl a top seller this year.

The organization is not releasing the exact number of orders made after the shooting, although USA Today reported that more than 2,000 orders were placed in the first two days after the incident.

“We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of community support following this senseless act,” Girl Scouts of Central Indiana CEO Deborah Hearn Smith told the Indy Star.

Because the huge number of orders creates a delivery challenge, volunteers also stepped up to help the troop deliver the cookies.

“The challenge then became how to get those cookies delivered,” Smith said. “[Monday] evening, dozens of volunteers from the four Amazon fulfillment centers in the Indianapolis-area donated their time and expertise to help the troop sort, pack and ship cookie orders from the company’s Whitestown fulfillment center.”

Proceeds from the sale of Sinai’s troop’s sales will help fund an fun, educational trip later this year.

“Sinai’s never been outside of Indianapolis, and so she’s really excited about maybe being able to take her whole troop of about 15 Girl Scouts somewhere, on a trip,” Girls Scouts of Central Indiana spokeswoman Deana Potterf told the Associated Press.

So far, no arrests have been made in the shooting.
