Innovative addition to Japanese railroad saves turtles

A new transit route has been put in place for Japan’s slowest commuters.

The West Japan Railway Company and Suma Aqualife Park have developed a route for turtles to get across tracks without putting themselves in danger.

Turtle traffic jams can get the poor creatures killed, and often create route delays or operating problems for the rail lines.

Prior to the escape ditch, turtles would wander from the ocean onto the tracks, where they would get lodged between two metal rails, as seen on the left.

They would have no choice but to continue along the railway to their demise, where they would either get hit by a train or get stuck in the rail-switching mechanism, according to RocketNews24.

The mechanism would get damaged in the process and have to be fixed, meaning less turtle tragedies will save money on repairs.

The escape route was implemented in April, as seen in the right photo. Since then, ten turtles have been spotted using the dugout path that runs safely underneath the train tracks, reports RocketNews24.
