Young arson survivor who lost entire family just wants cards for Christmas

This year, a young girl recovering after a tragic arson took her family nearly two years ago has a simple request for the holiday season: Christmas cards.

Safyre Terry suffered severe burns over 75 per cent of her body. She was found under the body of her father, who shielded her from the flames after their home in New York state was set ablaze, reports WGNtv.

She was taken to care by her father’s sister Liz Dolder and for the next 10 months spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals, receiving over 50 operations and losing her right and left foot in the process, Dodler told Buzzfeed.

“She continues to have problem with her mouth due to scar tissue tightening up,” said Dodler, with Safyre’s next operations scheduled for for the new year.

This Christmas, Dodler got her niece a little tree to place Christmas cards on, which Safyre loved, telling Dodler she can’t wait to fill it up, reports Buzzfeed.

“Honey, that’s probably not gonna happen,” Dodler told Safyre. “We maybe get 10 cards a year, and the card tree holds 100.”

Dodler wanted to make Safyre’s wish come true, so the family took to Facebook to see if anyone out in the Internet would be willing to help. The following was shared on Safyre Schenectady’s Super Survivor Facebook page on Dec. 4.

I wonder how many of my friends would take the time to write and send Safyre a Merry Christmas card that she can hang on her card tree….

The post has since gone viral, gaining over 21,000 shares on Facebook, and many are taking the time to send Safyre a card for her tree.

Dodler can’t believe the amount of support Safyre is getting from all over the world, posting to Facebook her and Safyre’s appreciation for all the cards they’ve recieved so far.

BELIEVE BELIEVE BELIEVE She did. When she said she can’t wait to fill up the card tree my response was I don’t think it’s gonna get filled up but I am sure we will get a few more cards. She BELIEVED and ALL of YOU are making it happen. THANK YOU…..FAITH LOVE HOPE TO ALL

A crowd funding page was also set up to help with Safyre’s growing medical expenses, and since her story has been shared, the total raised has grown to over $100,000 from around $10,000, according to a Reddit post.
