One year ago, Hyong Yi’s wife, Catherine Zanga, lost her battle to ovarian cancer. The Charlotte, North Carolina prosecutor and police attorney left behind two children, Anna and Alex, and a devoted husband. But as the one year anniversary of his wife’s death approached, Yi decided to channel his grief into something a bit different – 100 love notes honouring his late wife and the love they shared.

Late last week, the Charlotte assistant city manager, along with his two children, walked through the city, handing out the love notes, which Yi explained to The Charlotte Observer contained “the story of love and life we had.”

The #100lovenotes are written as though the couple are having a conversation, offering insight into the development of their love and relationship.

“Dearest, every insecurity I ever had about myself dissolves with you near. You are the best medicine. Beloved,” says one note, found on Yi’s site 100 Love Notes. The response: “Beloved, I like being your inspiration. It thrills me to hear you speak of love and happiness. Dearest.”

“My hope is that as we share these love notes with random people on the sidewalk, that they’ll take a moment to reflect on the love in their life,” Yi told The Charlotte Observer. “What I wouldn’t give to have one more minute – even a minute – to talk, to hold hands. I want people to take a minute to reflect on that and share a note with somebody they love.”
