Mom’s letter to teen who taught her daughter how to skateboard is all kinds of awesome

A Cambridge, Ont. mom’s open letter recently posted on Twitter is making us feel all the feels.

Jeanean Thomas’s daughter Peyton wanted to learn to skateboard – but the six-year-old thought it was “just for boys.”  It took some convincing, but Thomas finally got her daughter to believe that wasn’t the case – and they headed to the local skateboard park.

“The skateboard my daughter was using is actually mine from when I was a kid. She was surprised that I used to skateboard and I think that helped,” Thomas tells Yahoo Canada. “I told her that there is no such things as girl things or boy things, there are just things. If it interests her she can do it.”

But as Thomas writes in her letter, when they arrived at the park, a group of teenage boys who were smoking and swearing made her daughter “immediately want to turn around and go home.”

“I secretly wanted to go too because I didn’t want to have to put on my mom voice and exchange words with you,” she writes. “I also didn’t want my daughter to feel like she had to be scared of anyone, or that she wasn’t entitled to that skate park just as much as you were.”

She writes that despite the teens flying past her, Peyton proceeded to go down the ramp – but it wasn’t long before one of the teens approached her.

“I immediately prepared to deliver my ‘She’s allowed to use this park just as much as you guys’ speech when I heard you say, ‘Your feet are wrong. Can I help you?’” Thomas writes.

“You proceeded to spend almost an hour with my daughter showing her how to balance and steer, and she listened to you – a feat not attained by most adults. You held her hand and helped her get up when she fell down and I even heard you tell her to stay away from the rails so that she wouldn’t get hurt.”

The mom praised the teenage boy for being kind to her daughter – even though she says his friends mocked him for it.

“She left the skate park with a sense of pride and with the confidence that she can do anything, because of you.”

“Peyton was really encouraged by it all. She asks me to go the the skate park every day now,” Thomas tells Yahoo Canada. “I think this experience definitely gave her the confidence to try new things.”
