NYC sanitation worker rescues Shih Tzu stuffed in trash bag

CBRM residents will only be allowed one dark garbage bag, plus four clear bags.

One lucky puppy narrowly escaped ending up at a landfill.

Sanitation worker Victoria Roman was picking up garbage in Astoria, Queens, New York, when she saw that one of the trash bags was moving.

Inside the bag, Roman discovered a tiny purebred Shih Tzu with tangled, matted fur and overgrown nails. She could barely stand.

"She was in horrible, terrible condition," Roman told WABC, adding that had the pup not moved, she would have ended up in the back of the garbage truck.

Roman took the dog to BARC (Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition), an animal shelter in Williamsburg, where she made a remarkable recovery. Volunteers at the shelter named the dog Victoria, after the woman who saved her life.

"She's doing great, you know, considering what she's been through. She's a tiny little thing, has a lot of life in her, and not affected by what's happened to her, not emotionally affected by what happened to her, she still loves people in spite of what's happened," said Vinnie Spinola, BARC Animal Shelter.

Once Victoria's recovery is complete, she'll be adopted.

According to BARC's Facebook page, plenty of potential adoptive families have already stepped forward:

"We have been getting too many calls about her. We are overwhelmed with applications to adopt Victoria, we are not taking anymore, Sorry. If you would like to help donate to BARC to fund her recovery or to adopt another less fortunate dog besides Victoria, please go to our website: www.barcshelter.org."

BARC has organized a meet-and-greet with both Roman and Victoria tomorrow.
