NYC subway rider becomes an Internet sensation; gives shoes to homeless woman

A woman in New York City gave her shoes to a barefoot homeless woman on the subway.

A small act of kindness is all it took for one New York woman to instantly become an inspiration to others.

Kay Brown was on her way home from work when she saw a homeless woman riding in her bare feet.

The 26-year-old didn’t hesitate to help out the woman in need and graciously gave up her own shoes, she writes on her Facebook page.

“I asked her what her shoe size was and she said, ‘Size 7,’ which is my size, so I said, 'Please take my shoes,’” Brown told TODAY.com.

“She started crying immediately, saying: 'Are you sure?’ I had to,” she said.

Shortly after giving away her shoes, a gentlemen on the subway noticed the kind gesture and gave Brown a pair of Nike socks to wear over her thin ones.

She ended up walking six blocks home in those socks.

“It’s the middle of November and she has no where to go, so the least I could do is give her a pair of shoes,” she wrote on Facebook.

Brown shared a picture of the homeless woman putting on her boots and crying, which has since gone viral.

“It’s bananas,” she told New York Daily News. “My friends are coming out of the woodwork; texting and Facebook messaging me that they’ve been inspired to volunteer, and that makes me so glad.”

Brown is planning to use all the “insanely generous press” to start her own non-profit that will focus on giving shoes to those in need around the world.
