Officer passes SWAT test – after losing a leg

South Carolinian SWAT officer Keith Soules lost part of his leg last year when his motorcycle was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

He soon returned to work — as a records clerk.

Last Friday, the determined officer underwent a grueling physical test — which included rope-climbing, a mile-and-a-half run, pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups and a shooting component — to prove he was ready to return to the SWAT team. And he did so with a permanent prosthetic called a "cheetah" foot.

He passed.

"I was initially concerned with the rope climb," Soules said. "But it actually turned out to be pretty easy."

Captain Art Littlejohn from Spartanburg Public Safety recommended that Soules rejoin the tactical team as early as next week.

"I knew he would do well," Littlejohn said. "I think he's an inspiration to everyone — that something like that can happen to you, and you don't have to stop."
