Police motorcade helps 87-year-old woman complete run for cancer

On February 2nd, Lena Mae Beasley, 87, honoured her late husband's birthday and her son's cancer battle by participating in a "Fun Run for Cancer."

Beasley, who has dementia, left her nursing home in Olney, Texas, to take part in the run in Odessa. A police motorcade kept careful watch over the octogenarian as she made her way across town with her walker.

"She had a police escort and her [doctor] rode behind her in a golf cart for precaution as she has a pacemaker and some dementia problems," Beasley's niece, Linda Beasley Harrison, told CBS7 News.

"It was her determination because he was able to walk again," said Beasley Harrison of Beasley's son's fight against cancer. "That she was determined to do this relay for life…that's the kind of person she is. If she's 87 and she could do that, then by golly I ought to be doing more than I'm doing."

The photo of Beasley and her walker went viral this week after it was shared on Reddit.

"This was in my home town, it was a touching moment," redditor Farrellhog wrote.
