Poodle falls from the sky to a better life

A dog's very bad day may have saved her life.

The neglected, stray toy poodle already had it rough; her teeth were in need of dental work, her nails were ingrown.

Then a bird of prey snatched the down-on-her-luck canine off the ground.

The 18-pound dog was too much for the eagle to handle. Deep talon marks are the lasting proof the dog was, in fact, delivered via nature's air mail to the help she needed.

The dog, now called May, landed on the grounds of Sechelt's Shorncliffe Nursing Home.

With broken bones and deep lacerations, May survived the ordeal. Nursing staff on the grounds found the injured dog and brought her to the Sunshine Coast SPCA who later transferred her to the Eagleridge Veterinary Hospital for treatment.

The injuries from the fall were immediately treatable, but the issues arising from a life of neglect are more serious. The SPCA branch is hoping donations from the public will help fund the extensive dental surgery May needs.

Ironically, May's fall from the sky may have saved her life.

"May's survived so much, the least we can do is find her a good home. If anyone deserves a happy ending it's her," BC SPCA official Lorie Chortyk told the Vancouver Sun.
