A 10-year-old is being credited with saving his younger sister from choking to death.

Garrett Williams and his sibling Shanna, 6, were in the car with their grandparents on their way home from school in Pictou County, N.S., last week when the young girl started choking on a lifesaver, according to CTV Atlantic.

Their grandfather stopped the car in an attempt to save the girl’s life. When Garrett noticed that his sister was still in distress, he sprang into action, performing the Heimlich maneuver.

“Once I seen he was trying to press on her chest, I thought ‘I don’t think he’s going to be able to do it. I’ll have to go out and do it,’” Garrett Williams told CTV Atlantic. “So I went out behind her, I lifted her up and then the candy went actually quite fast right out and broke.”

Garratt Williams says he learned the Heimlich maneuver by taking a course called “We Can Help” at his school two years ago. Carla Williams, the children’s mother, says she couldn’t believe it when she heard what happened.

She thinks every child should take the course, which is offered by St. John Ambulance.

“I think if Garrett wasn’t there, she could have died,” Carla told CTV Atlantic.
